Getting Into Fly Fishing

Fly fishing is currently experiencing its biggest spike in popularity since the release of the film A River Runs Through It in 1992.  It is becoming a popular way for people of all demographics to meet like-minded people and engage with nature.

Nevertheless, it is still a dynamic and difficult sport, and people can find it intimidating to get started. Fly fishers have a language of their own and many beginners find themselves lost in technical terms that often help people leave the fly shop more confused than before they went in.  I have heard too many accounts from clients and friends who had a bad experience with a fly shop, leaving them feeling it is just too difficult to get into fly fishing.

I assure you: fly fishing does not need to be complicated!  What matters is to get yourself the basic gear, then just get out there and start exploring and spending time on the water.  There are friendly resources out there that do an amazing job at being beginner friendly and encouraging people to get started, enjoying this awesome sport.  If you live on Vancouver Island, for example, Robinson’s Outdoor store does an outstanding job of helping all their customers, regardless of skill and experience.  I encourage anybody who needs advice on how to get started to email me directly and I will be happy to help you as best as I can.

Gearing Up

Fly anglers tend to love to obsess over gear. Obviously, you cannot fish with out it, but it is far from necessary to spend the vast amounts many people do, just to get out there and have an awesome time. Below are some of the brands I trust the most and have been using for years. If you have an idea of where you will be fishing, what your target fish is, and your budget, feel free to shoot me an email and I will be happy to give you a few suggestions.
